Youth Peer Advocates support young people as they navigate challenges, crises, and difficult life experiences. While this work can be incredibly meaningful, repeated exposure to others' struggles can also have a lasting impact on the people providing support. 

This workshop will explore vicarious trauma through a peer advocacy lens, including how it differs from burnout and compassion fatigue. Participants will learn how trauma exposure can shape our thoughts and perspectives over time, including what are  some of the often-overlooked signs that it may be affecting us. Participants will also examine topics such as social media exposure, moral injury, boundaries, and the unique realities of carrying both personal lived experience and exposure to the experiences of others.

Grounded in trauma-informed principles, this workshop will provide opportunities for reflection while exploring strategies that support recovery, wellbeing, and long-term sustainability in youth peer advocacy work.

This training was developed by the NYS Justice Center for People with Special Needs to support the use of professional boundaries in the provision of care at provider agencies.  At the Justice Center, we recognize that professional boundaries play a crucial role in preventing abuse and neglect, as well as ensuring the delivery of high-quality care.

This training will define professional boundaries and discuss a concept called the zone of helpfulness. This information should be used to consider case scenarios covering three types of boundaries: physical, interpersonal, and psychological. This training will culminate with a discussion of self-awareness and self-help, and finish by looking at tools and resources available from the Justice Center.

The Justice Center offers live training opportunities, as well as recorded, on-demand professional boundaries training.

Over the last two decades, the suicide rate in the United States has steadily climbed, marked by a 62% surge among 10- to 24-year-olds between 2007 and 2021. This sobering trend heavily impacts historically marginalized communities. Disparities in who dies by suicide have widened, with rates of suicide among youth in Black, Latinx, and Asian/Pacific Islander communities seeing a particular increase. LGBTQI+ youth also experience profound disparities in suicide risk. In 2023, nearly one in five LGBTQI+ high school students reported attempting suicide during the previous year - more than three times the rate among heterosexual students.

And yet assessing suicidal behavior among youth remains very challenging. This can be, in part, because traditional approaches to suicide assessment may not adequately account for the contextual and cultural factors that shape a young person’s experiences and risk. Suicide prevention efforts are more likely to be effective when we integrate these factors and assess in ways that are rooted in the perspectives, values, and strengths of the youth and their family.

This training will help mental health clinicians develop greater awareness of the challenges associated with assessing risk for suicide in culturally-diverse,  pluralistic adolescent clients, and explore practical strategies for navigating these challenges in a manner that is culturally responsive and youth-centered. 

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Recognize developmental, cultural, family, identity, and contextual factors that may influence suicide risk and how adolescents communicate distress
• Identify how a provider’s own social location, personal identity, implicit biases, cultural assumptions, and emotional responses may influence assessment
• Summarize the core components of assessment, including risk factors, protective factors, culturally relevant strengths, developmental considerations, and other contextual variables
• Describe the challenges (empirical, developmental, cultural) that influence suicide assessment with adolescents and how to address these in practice
• Describe current trends in adolescent suicide, including disparities across racial, ethnic, sexual and gender minority, disability, and other marginalized youth populations

Major changes are coming to Medicaid eligibility for noncitizens. Beginning Oct. 1, 2026, major changes to Medicaid eligibility for noncitizens will take effect. Under H.R.1, federally funded, full-scope Medicaid coverage for noncitizens will be limited to Lawful Permanent Residents, Cuban-Haitian entrants and Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrants. These changes could affect enrollment processes and coverage for many individuals seeking care. The National Council is committed to helping members understand what is changing and how to prepare. As states and providers work to implement these requirements, join our policy staff for a practical discussion of the changes under H.R.1, related CMS guidance and a CMS state implementation toolkit designed to help organizations navigate these changes.
